Dree Festival in Ziro

Dree Festival
Ziro Valley, Lower Subansiri, Arunachal Pradesh
The Dree Festival is a vibrant celebration of the Apatani tribe in Arunachal Pradesh, India. Rooted in the tribe's customs and spiritual beliefs, this festival aims to ensure a successful harvest. Over three days, rituals are performed by village shamans, including animal sacrifices and liver readings to predict future harvests. Cultural programs and the enjoyment of home-brewed millet beer are also part of the festivities. Skilled in bamboo craftsmanship, the Apatani people create altars and totems during the festival. With no harvesting allowed during this time, it provides a unique opportunity to interact with locals and witness the rituals firsthand.
Once the animal is sacrificed, the shaman examines its liver to predict the forthcoming season's harvest. Although I couldn't comprehend their words, their smiles and brief bursts of laughter assured me of a bountiful season ahead.

Ziro is also on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage for their Cultural Landscape. Grateful everyday for the things I get to experience.
